How long must banks keep deposit account records?

National banks must retain records of any deposit over $100 for at least 5 years. At the bank's discretion, these records may be retained for longer periods.

How long must a bank keep canceled checks / check records / copies of checks?

Generally, if a national bank does not return canceled checks to its customers, the bank must either retain the canceled checks—or maintain the capacity to provide legible copies of the checks—for seven years.

The bank must provide you with a copy of any canceled check within a reasonable period of time from your request. The bank may charge a fee for this service.
